If your Cub Cadet XT1 riding mower keeps throwing the deck belt—no matter how many new parts or belts you’ve installed—you’re not alone. We recently had a customer bring in their XT1 Enduro complaining of the exact issue. Despite replacing the belt and multiple deck components, the belt just wouldn’t stay on.
In this post, I’ll walk you through the step-by-step diagnosis and repair process, show you what most people miss, and explain how we finally solved the issue. Whether you’ve got a 42" or 46" deck, this applies to both. Scroll down for the full breakdown—or watch the complete video here on YouTube for the hands-on walkthrough.
Start With the Basics: Leveling & Tire Pressure
Before you even pull the deck, check these:
Tire pressure: Should be even side-to-side (10 PSI rear / 14 PSI front max)
Deck leveling: Slightly lower in the front, perfectly level left to right
A misaligned deck or uneven tires won’t directly cause a belt to jump, but it absolutely contributes to stress on the pulleys and tensioners.
OEM Deck Belt Matters—A Lot
This mower already had an OEM deck belt installed, which is critical. Aftermarket belts are notorious for causing fitment and tension issues. Always start with OEM.
The Real Cause: Worn Brake Pad = Misaligned Idler Arm
Once we pulled the deck, everything looked good—belt routed correctly, pulleys spinning freely, keepers intact. But when we examined the idler arm and brake assembly, we found the issue:
The brake pad on the idler arm was completely worn down.
This caused the arm to rotate too far, pulling the pulley out of alignment and letting the belt jump off—even though the keeper was doing its job.
Fix: Replace the Brake Pad & Adjust Spring Tension
We used an aftermarket brake kit that outperforms OEM pads. After replacing the worn brake, we also adjusted the spring bracket to increase belt tension. Here’s what we did:
Removed the idler arm spring
Pulled the bracket and bent it in a vice to shorten the travel
Reinstalled everything and tested tension
Now the belt tension was tight, with proper coil spacing on the spring—even under blade engagement.
Other Things to Check (That We Verified Were Good)
Deck pulley bearings (spin freely, no grinding)
Idler pulley play (minimal up/down movement)
Deck guards not bent or missing
Grass buildup not impeding rotation
Belt not cracked or glazed
Proper keeper placement near all pulleys
Final Result
After this fix, the deck belt stayed on, the pulleys ran smooth, and tension held solid. No more throwing belts, and no costly replacements needed.
Note: There’s no traditional tensioner on this deck—so if the belt seems loose, you’ll need to manually adjust spring pull using the method above.

Diagnose the worn brake pad
Remove the deck safely
Replace and adjust the idler spring bracket
Reinstall everything with perfect belt tension
Pro Tip:
If your mower keeps throwing belts even after you’ve replaced everything, check the brake pads and idler arm alignment. It’s one of the most overlooked issues and the #1 reason we see new belts getting tossed off good pulleys.

Frequently Asked Questions: FAQ
Q: Why does my Cub Cadet XT1 deck belt keep slipping off?
A: Worn brake pads on the idler arm or weak spring tension are the most common causes. Our guide shows how to diagnose and fix the issue.
Q: What size deck belt does the Cub Cadet XT1 use?
A: The correct size depends on deck width. Always use an OEM belt—aftermarket versions often cause tension and fitment problems.
Q: Can deck leveling or tire pressure cause the belt to come off?
A: Yes. Uneven tire pressure or an unlevel deck adds stress to the pulleys and idler system, increasing the chances of belt throw.
Q: How do I increase belt tension on a Cub Cadet XT1?
A: You can adjust the idler arm spring bracket manually by bending it slightly to increase spring pull and belt tension.
Q: Do I need to remove the mower deck to fix this issue?
A: Yes. To access and inspect the idler arm, brake pads, and pulleys, you’ll need to safely remove the mower deck first.
